Great Pacific Garbage Patch review

This Article talks about the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. A vast collection of floating debris about 1,000 miles off the coast of California. This article says that there are five garbage parch also know as gyres for each of the major ocean basins that contains plastic caused by our consumption trash. Also, according to the  Australian Research Council Centre Of Excellence for Climate System Science we cant  eliminate the plastic waste on the patches stating that it doesn't matter where is coming from or how it get to the ocean because plastic garbage will end up in any of the five basin. It can remain after the person who used to own it passed away This are really bad news, our trash legacy will be others people future problems. Ocean species are paying for our mistakes and irresponsibility. This means trash last more than ourselves. I think that if we were able to created it we should be able to disappeared but not in landfills or oceans, perhaps reduce it. Instead work together because it is an international problem .Since parches are constantly exchanging garbage waste, garbage of country can end up in this parches. We may seek for a solution sooner before the six patch ends its formation. I want animals to live, I care for my planet, my health and everyone should do the same.
  We can do this!!!

Edward Humes Garbology -Chapter 5

In this new chapter Edward Humes, presented us the ocean as another kind of trash (especially plastic)disposal. He talks about a Project named Kaisei. It consists on cleaning the ocean from plastics and other garbage waste. Also, this project studies and researches ocean water,  to help find a solution to get cleaner the ocean after being most of it covered by debris of plastics. A project founded by Mary Crowley. She is an sixty one year old sailor that at young age have been traveling in the ocean. An ocean that for her hasn't been the same it was, when she was young. This new ocean she sees every time is more contaminated, full of trash that is killing a lot of species of the sea. When I found out in  that Mary Crowley was  a sixty one years old lady,I was shocked because this lady had been spending her life on ocean preserves and clean ups  because the ocean is really important to her. I found very inspiring that after that she had some health problems she kept trying to help the ocean and worrying about it. When she heard that it was impossible to get it completely clean she keep cleaning with her crew of volunteers because for her they where doing something to protect it  so future fishes couldn't  eat small particles of plastics; not to mention the at her age is rarely find a person that is so committed to help save the ocean and its species. It reflects how passionate she is when it comes to ocean love. After reading this chapter I felt that I want to get involve to help my planet, our planet because there no other place to live in.Once again, our trash waste had caused severe damages to our ecosystems. The more I learn about trash and its effects in or environment the more I blame myself and my ignorance toward trash but is not time for who fault it is. Instead to get involve , to help, reducing our consumption and value more the things that really matter like our planet.

One mans 365 days of trash

It was very interesting how Dave Chameides stored all of his trash for a year in his basement to make his waste footprint. Allowing him to see how much trash he produced on a year and making him manage to create less trash because he had a small space to dump the trash. This could be one of the many solutions to manage create less trash if all Americans challenge themselves to keep their trash at home for a whole year maybe they will notice how much they consume. Allowing them to reduce their consumption as Dave Chameides did. This waste footprint by Dave reminded me how few years ago Coca Cola in Mexico sell their soda but  instead of giving us a new plastic bottle every time we buy their product , they requested us to return the plastic bottle of the old soda we bought from them in order to receive their product. This was when refilling with soda the already used plastic bottles were popular and in that time the streets were out of plastic bottles, but since they change the refilling option every street in Mexico has plastic bottles in their streets. No to mention the trash increase it provoked.

The Joy of Garbage

Reading this article has made comprehend more how our trash is being created and how government has being trying to hide us the reality of the low price products and its production . The video contained a valuable information, a raw reality of the stuff we consume. When I was watching the video, she made a true statement that the government job is to watch for us, a job that he simply is not doing. Also how government is using fancy words in order to hide the reality for example when it comes to exploitation of natural resources they call it "extraction". We are running out of resources and it caused by our obsession to consume more and more. A consumption that the government wanted us to believe using the media to make us buy because if don't buy or own stuff we don't have value. This is the idea to keep America economy strong. It is horrible to know how we are being manipulated to consume more than we need. We have to be aware now, before is too late that these imposed ideas of "consumption" are killing us little by little.The trash we produce out of that consumption is contaminating our planet that produces toxics. Even kids are consuming toxics out of breast milk . It cruel to know that government in alliance with corporations are contracting people with no options to work for them paying low wages and putting their life in danger because they have no other option than to work in a toxic environment. I feel angry and sad because we are contaminating the world and we are taking away other people natural resources in order to satisfy ourselves and increasing our value by consuming more than we need. We have to start changing those dumb ideals of value. We have to stop believing in materialism.

Edward Humes-Garbology Chapter 4

The more I read Garbology the more I feel disappointed for what I had being doing wrong with my trash. In Chapter four Humes presented David Steiner a CEO of the world's largest trash company , most important the $12 billion revenues on the garbage business. Humes described him as trash king. Steiner assumptions toward trash may sound outrageous but do fit in our reality. He believes that there will always be trash waste and we will always need landfills. At this point, trying to be on his shoes, I will make the same assumptions because society hasn't done anything to trash reduction and we are increasing more and more our trash waste .Trash that ironically create more money out of waste consumption and environment contamination. In this chapter, I read that people were against the plans for Puente Hills waste-to-energy because the smokestack emission it will produce when the trash will be burned. They wanted those plans perform in another location away from their  homes reflecting how the opponents poorly understood the economics and logistic of trash. They wanted a trash solution but they didn't show any interest of being part of it, trading a power plant for an even bigger trash mountain. This ignorance and the poor interest of finding a solution for trash reduction is awful. Also, the consideration of closing a landfill will not make a difference because trash will be in the same place. This make me feel that everyone should cooperate and really show interest in trash management because sooner or later we may all be buried by our trash.

Following Garbology Humes interview

Reading this interview of Edward Humes gives me a closer interpretation why is so important to read his book . This interview makes me understand a little bit more the book content. I found it interesting how smalls pieces of plastic and trash can be spread on the whole city if we let the seagulls search in the garbage landfills. Its terrible to know how animals are paying for our mistakes, how small fishes are eating small pieces of plastic that contaminates their bodies but the worst part is that they are part of the food chain and being eaten by bigger fishes will contaminate the bigger fishes bodies as well and the result is the fishes end up being part of humans food. This means we are eating our own trash and animals are being victims of this terrible garbage crises .We are not only putting in danger their species but as well ours. This interview revealed some options to make less garbage like the genius idea of taking plastic bags to the market that we already own instead of getting new ones. It is disappointing to find out that even paper bags do contaminate and doesn't make any difference from the plastic bags contamination. I really love the possibility of getting billionaire out of trash like  Zhang the Chinese girl who became billionaire out of American trash. We have to stop generating so much trash and now is not an option is an obligation.

Garbology by Edward Humes- Chapter 3

In this new chapter once again Edward Humes amazes us with explicit new information about the Garbage problem we all now are facing. In this chapter, he includes the information of different perspectives of how media is playing the most important role on garbage waste and consumption. It is outrageous to know how media , TV commercials are manipulating us to consume more than we really need in order to make America business and economy grow which generate more unnecessary waste of trash to our environment. At this point I feel disappointed because I been part of this unnecessary wasted garbage contribution ending up to make bigger the already big mountain of garbage in the landfills. It terrible how the idea of consumption is generating money to our economy but at the same time is generating tons of trash that in short time will not fit on the landfills. In addition , I found very disappointing how big beverage companies such as Coca Cola came up with the idea of plastic bottles as their product container letting us and our environment to pay the highest price such as paying more money for the plastic bottles and also the problem of how to deal with plastic bottles once they were utilized.

Garbology By Edward Humes- Chapter 2

In chapter two Edward Humes described us the 1890s New York, when the city was the smelliest and dirtiest-a garbage city. The mixing of trash waste in the streets provoked death from preventable diseases such as cholera to the New Yorkers . He explains how the trash was so severe that pigs could dispose of garbage for eating purposed. People were using them like a part of a solution to get rid of trash little by little by letting the pigs eat the trash but at the same time using them as meat providers. For me it was surprising that even The White House couldn't scape from this trash crisis because it was plagued by the smells of festering garbage too back then. It was so inspiring how the Colonel George E. Waring  a Civil War veteran  put his hands on work to improve the New York city trash crisis by amassing an army with broomsticks and ash cans converting this army into street cleaners. Later known as "white wings". He gave an outstanding example to the New York citizens allowing them to see by themselves that having the city streets clean and out of trash was convenient for everyone in many ways. In addition, he also mentioned how Angelinos had been encouraged and expected to incinerate their trash because it was a way of avoiding costly trash collectors services. I believe that we tend to burn our trash because at some point we want the trash completely gone (forever) so later on we don't have to deal with it ever again. So far this Chapter contains relevant information of how other solutions had come to a failure regarding trash eradication purposes.

Garbology By Edward Humes -Chapter 1

 Reading chapter one has made me change the way I think of trash , my own trash.I was aware that trash was a serious problem to our society but in this book Edward Humes gives us facts, statistics of how our trash is being used and where it is really going. Facts that are impossible to ignore. My first reaction after reading this chapter is that we are killing each other with our own "Trash Crisis" and that we have to find a solution before its too late. It was surprising to know that Puente Hills has been the final resting place of  Los Angeles County flow of garbage for three decades with 130 millions of tons of it and still counting. Not to mention it is the largest municipal dump in the country landfill active .Also I found out so interesting that The BOMAG bulldozer can mold and squeeze up to 13,000 tons of garbage into fifteen foot deep rectangle. Trash that is later piled , building a huge garbage mountain. Is terrible to know that were making mountains of garbage because it really doesn't go anywhere or disappear as we expect when the trash car picked it up from our homes but it ends up to a landfill. That explains why we use the method of using the landfills to hide the trash when we should have been working on a solution to stop generating so much trash because what we will do if we all end up like the Gastons trapped by our own trash.The crisis cannot go on indefinitely.
